    After years spent mapping the remnants of Boulder County’s once-vibrant apple tree population, a local preservation project is now planting new orchards to help ensure rare and nearly forgotten varieties aren’t lost forever. The Boulder Apple Tree Project (BAPT) began in 2017, when CU Boulder ecology professor Katie Suding’s children spotted an old apple tree growing improbably in an open prairie near their home.

    The Lyons-based craft brewery MainStage Brewing Company has expanded into Gunbarrel and established its own brewery, taking over the Beyond the Mountain brewing space that opened in 2017 and is now closed. The move builds on an existing partnership: MainStage founders Sam Scruby and Eric Kean had been contracting with the Gunbarrel brewery to have their beer brewed there since 2021. “We did a collaboration with the guys at Beyond the Mountain,” Scruby said.

    Longtime friends Valerie Brotelande and Scott Waller did extensive neighborhood research before opening Duets Bistro & Deli in Longmont. They went so far as to live in the surrounding area off Airport Road for many years, raising families and embedding themselves in the community before starting their own restaurant. “He lives on that side of Airport,” Brotelande said, pointing in one direction, “and I live on that side of Airport,” pointing in the other.
