When I think of the sci-fi boom in the late 1960s and ’70s, film series such as Star Wars and Star Trek instantly bring up fond memories and genre-defining visuals. Another franchise that deserves recognition is Planet of the Apes. Since 1968, the franchise has spawned classic lines and indelible scenes, and explored contemporary issues throughout its 50-year history. The newest reboot in the franchise, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” is set to release on May 10.

Why are dolls so creepy? It’s largely because of how human most of them appear even though they’re not, giving many of them a lingering sense of appearing off somehow. Filmmakers have latched onto this idea and made evil dolls a horror staple. Seeing these plastic, seemingly harmless miniature versions of ourselves cause destruction is a thrilling fright — one I’m very familiar with as a horror aficionado.

I’ve been a science-fiction fan for as long as I can remember. I grew up on Star Wars (honestly, who didn’t?), and Buzz Lightyear was my favorite Disney character by a mile. An entire genre based on speculation over where technology and science could and should — or shouldn’t — take us is a fun way to think about our place in the universe. It’s also a creative gold mine for movie makers, since there are scores of books, video games, short stories and comics to draw ideas and inspiration from.

Sometimes a movie trailer completely grabs your attention. It can be a mysterious tease or a heart-pounding preview that captures your imagination. The latter applies to the trailer I saw for “Abigail,” a horror film hitting theaters in April. It follows a group of kidnappers who take their target, a child named Abigail, and spirit her away to a mansion for ransom. Unfortunately for them, Abigail is a vampire, and it’s no spoiler to say ample bloodshed ensues.
