Three Asian adoptees, each raised far from their birthplaces, have found connection and identity through shared experiences in the Susquehanna Valley. In the late 1990s, Cambodia saw a surge in international adoptions. Over 400 Cambodian orphans were adopted by families abroad, including Maya Sony Schwartzwaler. At just 10 months old, she was brought to the United States to begin a new life.

ACCORDING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES, THERE ARE CURRENTLY ABOUT 15,000 CHILDREN IN TEMPORARY FOSTER CARE ACROSS PENNSYLVANIA.
