    History meets celebration as Harrisburg kicks off its Juneteenth festivities. For the first time, the city of Harrisburg is hosting a Juneteenth parade to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The parade will feature community organizations, food vendors and live performances.

    PENNDOT IS DOING TO FIX THEM. POTHOLES ARE PRETTY COMMON HERE IN THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY. WE SEE THEM EVERY DAY, BUT SINKHOLES HAPPEN LESS OFTEN AND THEY OFTEN LEAD TO ROAD CLOSURES AND DETOURS BECAUSE THEY TAKE LONGER TO REPAIR. POTHOLES AND SINKHOLES ARE DEPRESSIONS IN THE GROUND, AND EVEN THOUGH THEY SOUND SIMILAR, SINKHOLES AND POTHOLES ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BEASTS, SO TO SPEAK. POTHOLES ONLY FORM ON ROADWAYS AND USUALLY START FORMING WHEN WATER GETS UNDER THE PAVEMENT.

    For most kids, school’s out for summer, but for some families, that means one less guaranteed meal each day. To help fill that gap, Hampden Hunger Heroes, with support from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, is offering free lunches throughout the summer. Families do not need to live in Cumberland County to participate. By law, all meals must be eaten on-site. Volunteers say this ensures each child is accounted for and every meal is properly distributed.
