Copyright ©2025 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

BANGKOK—Construction worker Khin Aung Tun was taking a bathroom break on the first floor of a half-built Bangkok skyscraper when tremors from an earthquake in his native Myanmar shunted the ground beneath him. Khin Aung Tun was one of only three people in his 15-strong Myanmar crew to make it out alive when the tower collapsed Friday under the force of the quake that struck his homeland 600 miles away. His brother, who was working on the 29th floor of the tower, is still missing under the rubble.

Honored to be among this year's winners of the Zenger Prize for journalism for this story--my last one as an Africa correspondent--on the heroic, but heartbreaking race to rescue 370 Sudanese orphans from a war zone.

After a year of often difficult stories, and 8 years of covering Africa, I couldn't have wished for a better tale to sign off on: This is a hero story, about ordinary people in war and their extraordinary acts of courage and compassion. #KeepEyesOnSudan https://t.co/ORghgHrCF0

RT @JonathanEmont: @gksteinhauser @felizvsolo Real feat of reporting to get these terrible details out to the world.

Harrowing and important.

Great, gutsy job by @BBCNewsAsia to send a journalist across into #Burma undercover, evading the #Myanmar SAC junta's outrageous & unacceptable restrictions on foreign journalists entering the country. Shocking images from #Mandalay are must see. #MyanmarEarthquake https://t.co/SB4npLAH97
