Amma Asante’s The Billion Dollar Spy,starring Russell Crowe and Harry Lawtey, is in pre-production ahead of a 10-week Hungary shoot which begins April 14. Post-production work will take place in the UK. The producers are Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan and Cher Hawrysh for Walden Media with Akiva Goldsman and Greg Lessans for Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures. Jane Hooks is executive producer; Ildiko Kemeny, David Minkowski and Ferenc Szále of Pioneer Stillking Films are on board as co-producers.

Screen Australia has named Michele McDonald to the newly created role of producer offset and co-production unit (POCU) advisor. The Producer Offset is a refundable tax offset (rebate) for producers of Australian feature films, television and other projects. Australia currently has co-production agreements with Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.

White Owl Film Studios has officially opened in Northern Ontario, Canada. The studio, led by CEO Roy Roque,, features 20,000 sq. feet of clear-span studio space with 64-foot ceilings and full-service rigging and logistics support through Upright Services. Projects that shoot at White Owl Film Studios can access up to $2m in Northern Ontario Heritage Fund (NOHFC) funding, covering up to 50% of eligible production costs.

Production is underway in New South Wales on Baltasar Kormákur's survival thriller Apex for Netflix. The film stars Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana, and filming began in February in Sydney and Western Sydney. From Monday March 3 to Friday, March 8, filming will take place in Glenbrook Gorge, using a unit base set up at Lapstone Oval. The film follows a grieving woman who retreats into the wilderness, only to find herself in a game of cat and mouse with a serial killer.
