Quand je me gare devant chez John Malkovich par un gris matin d’hiver, mon premier réflexe est de vérifier que je ne me suis pas trompée d’adresse. Je me trouve dans une banlieue-dortoir de Boston, tous les pavillons sont identiques et je viens de croiser un panneau de signalisation “Prière de ralentir : traversée de tortues”. Je n’imaginais pas retrouver l’un des acteurs les plus extravagants du cinéma américain dans ce genre d’endroit. J’ouvre le portail. Mon hôte m’attend devant la porte.

John Malkovich lives behind a white picket fence. I arrive on a grey winter’s morning, double-checking that I’ve got the right place. This isn’t exactly where I expected to find one of America’s most idiosyncratic, unconventional actors: a sleepy suburb of Boston, passing modest houses and a “Slow: Turtle Crossing” sign on my way over. I unlatch the fence gate and, sure enough, Malkovich is waiting for me at his front door. The place is a rental, so he can’t hang anything on the walls.
