My two trips to the U.S. are complete. I went to California in March for Alt Summit (with a quick stop in Utah, too). Then I went to Florida last week to speak at another conference. On both trips I made sure to leave space in my suitcase (the first trip included a checked bag, the second was carry-on only) to bring home American treats. No doubt because of these recent travels, “homesick foods”, and how our list of homesick foods has changed over the years, has been on my mind lately.

Ben Blair, Flora June, and I, arrived back in France on Friday. And then I slept the entire weekend. That is not an exaggeration. I was only awake for a few hours on both Saturday and Sunday. It was a very good, very full, very tiring trip. I think the last time I felt that exhausted was life with a newborn. Donald Trump keeps referring to Canada as the 51st state. He has been very open about wanting to take over Canada and force this entire other country to become part of America. Why is he saying this and thinking this? Who knows what’s going on in his fucked up brain, but several possibilities come to mind. He’s watching Russia attempt to do this to Ukraine, and wants to follow their example. He thinks being an aggressor on this scale would make him seem more manly.

Flora June has a two-week school break happening right now. We weren’t planning to go anywhere, because both Ben Blair and I have big projects looming, but we found some cheap tix to Rome and decided to book a quick, last-minute weekend trip! And Betty is joining us too! We’ll be there Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We have been to Rome before — I think it was 2012, when Flora June was just a baby — so of course, Betty and Flora June have no memory of that visit.

He, and a team of 6 young sycophants — all unelected, all private citizens — illegally took control of U.S. Treasury databases, giving them access to the social security numbers of all Americans, and giving them control of the systems that pay your social security checks and tax refunds. In addition, the same team spent the weekend taking over USAID and are attempting to shut it down.

While worldwide, January has been rough (that’s putting it mildly), in the Blair Family’s life, January has meant a lot of time together — in fact, during the first week of January we were all together for the first time in 6 months. So unexpectedly, I’m looking back at January with gratitude. The older the kids get, and the farther they adventure, the more rare it is to have the family all together in one place. Once a year, maybe twice, is probably the most we’re going to get.
