Flavel and her husband work full time and do not have many family members who can babysit in the Newport area, so they enrolled their sons Aksel and Ronan in GDC as early as kindergarten.

NEWPORT — Maintenance that was supposed to repair Newport roads last year damaged some of them instead, two audience members complained at the Newport City Council’s May 19 meeting. Pat Williams said workers did a poor job of laying out chipseal up Quail Loop during last year’s maintenance. Then, the chipseal was torn by a resident doing wheelies on the road shortly after. When he tried to fix part of the road himself, one worker stopped him, claiming the crews would do it.

NEWPORT — The Newport Farmers Market has been awarded a $1,500 grant for its Kids Bucks program. From AgWest Farm Credit’s Rural Opportunity Grant program, the grant will allow the Newport Farmers Market to host Kids Bucks weekly instead of only once a month. Starting the first weekend of June, children who sign up for the program can earn Kids Bucks by participating in educational activities related to nutrition, such as crafts and scavenger hunts.

After decades of a career in coffee that ended with two drive-thrus sold amid family health crises, Stampede owner Patty Rowe had gotten a job in property management instead. But another opportunity to work with coffee came years later — not at a shop or a stand, but in a horse trailer. “I’m like, ‘Oh, this is my passion,’” said Rowe, 60.
