“My name is Philippa Day I’m a good person” reads a line on the first page of The Department. It shatters me; the first death mentioned in the book. I have to sit and pause for a few minutes after reading it, and it comes back to me again and again as I continue reading. I’m glad it does: it’s a reminder that everyone who has been murdered at the hands of the government did not die in vain. It’s a reminder to me too, to not die under the hands of oppression.

Damola Ilesanmi had recently graduated from Bradford University before passing on in June. Oluwapelumi Victoria Ayodele was pursuing a master’s degree in Cybersecurity when she succumbed to a seizure in July at the age of twenty-six.

The NHS is under severe strain, with chronic underfunding and understaffing at the heart of its dysfunction. This neglect not only pushes many individuals toward private care but also reinforces a system where bureaucratic procedures take priority over genuine human needs.

The process of migration and experiences of immigration systems can create or exacerbate mental ill-health, distress and trauma. Specifically the violence of the border actively produces trauma, with over half of people seeking asylum experiencing mental distress, and with migrants and their children being significantly more likely to be diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
