Vasyl Pipa is not a Ukrainian soldier, but his job, at times, can be as dangerous as fighting in the trenches. As members of the White Angels, a branch of the police that evacuates civilians from the front line, he and others take extreme risks to rescue some of the last civilians who remain close to the fighting. One of Mr. Pipa's tasks is to evacuate civilians from Kurakhove, and from along the entire front line in the region.

The scene after the attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk was as grim as it was grimly familiar after almost 18 months of full-scale war. The smell of fire and death hung heavy on Tuesday morning over the ruins of a hotel, an apartment block and a popular Italian restaurant that were among the buildings destroyed by two Russian missile strikes on Monday night, killing at least seven people and wounding dozens more.

Rescuers were searching for survivors on Tuesday morning from two Russian missile strikes on a small eastern Ukrainian city just 37 minutes apart the previous night in what Ukrainian officials said was an attempt to harm emergency workers responding to the first attack. At least seven people — including one rescuer — were killed in the Monday evening strikes on Pokrovsk, about 69km to the east of the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk and 48km from the front line.

Rescuers completed a search for survivors on Tuesday after a Russian missile strike on a small Ukrainian city on Monday evening that was followed by another 37 minutes later, appearing to target emergency workers responding to the first attack. The final toll, officials said, was seven people dead, including one rescuer, and 82 injured, including 38 emergency workers and two children.
