Science-business partnership in practiceEstablished by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the Stockholm Resilience Center (SRC), Action2020 was a partnership that spanned the academic and business sectors to set science-based targets based on the planetary boundaries framework. WBCSDâs previous strategy, Vision 2050 was too far out into the future and had been developed for business by business.

AbstractCities and companies have great potential to reduce pressures on Earth system boundaries. Science-based target setting has emerged as a powerful tool to help achieve the potential, but its uptake has been limited. Moreover, cities and companies usually develop their targets separately, even though many are co-located. Focusing on the top 200 cities and 500 companies by greenhouse gas emissions, we analyse the current state and potential of adopting science-based targets for climate.

In the summer of 2022, waterways in Europe suffered historic droughts. On the Rhine River, which contributes approximately $80bn to the surrounding economies each year, water levels dropped to between 10% and 50% lower than historical averages. Ships had to lessen their loads to avoid hitting the bottom, and smaller loads sent shipping prices skyrocketing by as much as 30% overnight. Since the situation is not expected to improve, companies are considering how to ensure supply chain resilience.
