    On the outskirts of Guilford County in the town of Oak Ridge, there’s a long alleyway of grass stretching between the trees as far as the eye can see. Brenda Chaney’s farmhouse is in the middle of the path. Far beneath the surface: three pipes full of natural gas, mostly methane, obtained through hydraulic fracturing or fracking. The Williams Companies’ Transco natural gas pipeline, stretching from New York City to the southern tip of Texas, channels it underneath properties like Chaney’s.

    At the intersection of Davie and Market streets, across from the J. Douglas Galyon Depot, there’s a barren plot of land—a quiet void at the center of Greensboro’s bustling downtown. Concrete slabs adorned with graffiti and wildflowers hint at a former life. A postcard sent from Greensboro to Baltimore in 1956 paints a grand view of the 13-story King Cotton Hotel, which opened at that very intersection in January 1927 with 250 guest rooms.

    This year’s RiverRun International FilmFestival, April 11-19, will present 177 films from 34 countries, narrowed down from nearly 2,000 submissions. But this Triad tradition didn’t start in Winston-Salem. In conversation with The Thread, Interim Co-Executive Directors Mary Dossinger and Tiffany Jones walked through the festival’s history and impact on the region. The festival was originally held in Brevard, North Carolina, beginning in 1998.
