    While the weather wasn’t all that pleasant this past Saturday, June 21, it’s being hot and steamy beat the downpours that had plagued the Metropolis Elks Lodge’s second soccer shootout. If memory serves correctly, it’s rained just about every weekend from early-May to mid-June, and with all the rainouts, the turnout for this year’s shootout was down significantly. For all the uninitiated, the shootout is basically a kicking contest.

    This past weekend, June 21-22, was a hot and humid one to be sure, but 40 couples from around the area braved the elements to compete in the annual Metropolis Country Club Superman couples tournament. The event is timed to roughly coincide with the annual Metropolis Superman Celebration held the second weekend of June, which draws thousands of Superman fans to town.

    Approximately 100 grade school boys from all over the area attended the annual Patriot boys basketball camp, held June 2-5. The camp was split into two age groups with second- through fifth-graders coming in the morning and sixth- through ninth-graders in the afternoon. The camp is advertised as “a camp of hard work,” and it delivers on the advertising. The camp concludes with individual contests like free throw shooting, prescribed shot making in a given time frame and one-on-one free play.

    After DuQuoin was eliminated from the IHSA Class 2A baseball tournament, the SIRR Conference released its picks for the All-Conference teams for the Ohio and Mississippi divisions. On the Ohio side, the 28-member team included six players each from Massac County and Harrisburg. Herrin landed five on the honors team.

    Last Friday, May 30, brought the curtain down on another successful Lady Patriots basketball camp. Running from May 27-30, the camp attracted an excess of 60 campers, all with hopes of becoming better basketball players at their next level, be it grade school, junior high or high school.
