A hothead South Tyneside scaffolder punched a policeman in the face when he recklessly stepped into a street commotion involving his dad. Tony Foggon, 32, watched in fury as the officer defensively pushed his father away in Glasgow Road, Brockley Whins, on Wednesday, May 11. Foggon, also of Glasgow Road, moved forward and bashed the sergeant, leaving him in pain, prosecutor Emily Hunt said.

A suspect has appeared in court accused of the attempted murder of two men at a house of multi-occupancy in Sunderland. Adam Ahmed, 29, is alleged to have stabbed them with a knife at the property in Roker Avenue, Roker, on the afternoon of Saturday, June 21. It is claimed Ahmed, of the same address, stabbed one alleged victim in the neck and then several times further in the property’s yard.

Ofsted described the attitude of youngsters at St Aloysius Catholic Infant School as “exemplary” and found they act as role models to each other. Campaigners battling to save a swathe of Green Belt in South Tyneside say they are already being denied access to parts of it. Residents on Jarrow’s Fellgate Estate claim they are being blocked from using a long-walked gravel path which separates their homes from the fought-over farmland. A South Tyneside man has had his hopes of working as a delivery driver dashed after he was banned from the roads after being caught drug driving in the midnight hour. Kasem Salem, 23, came to the attention of police when he zoomed past in the opposite direction in his VW Tiguan as he headed north from Sunderland to Cleadon. Officers on the A1018 Sunderland Road spun around and caught up with Salem, of Marshall Wallis Road, Chichester, South Shields, outside Cleadon’s Britannia pub.

A serial South Tyneside thief who refuses to quit booze and drugs to aid his reform is starting 44 weeks behind bars for committing 32 thefts. Homeless Christopher Cameron, 42, kept his liberty when convicted of half of those crimes at a court hearing on Wednesday, March 5. He was offered professional support to help him mend his ways but failed to engage and promptly returned to crime.

Butterflies and bugs have helped a small nursery in South Tyneside win praise from education inspectors. Staff at Stanley’s at Whitburn and Marsden have been using the insects to create curiosity, motivate and even boost the youngsters’ mathematics skills. Inspectors discovered youngsters are gaining life insight and boosting their desire to learn by being shown butterflies emerging from their cocoons.
