There is no tougher time in local body politics than working through the Long Term Plan, from which the end result will be the projected rates increase for the next 12 months. It is the thing sleepless nights are made of, both for staff and councillors, all of whom are acutely aware that whatever the increase, it will create hardship for a certain percentage of their ratepayers.

    Gas and electricity deals are finally returning slowly as firms start to battle for new customers once again after pulling switchable tariffs when the energy crisis hit two years ago. Data from Electralink shows there has been a surge in switching in recent months, with 201,000 switches completed in December – 86% more than December 2022. And after the energy price cap rose by 5% on 1 January, even more people are considering if it’s worth switching to a fixed tariff.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the payments will take place between 6 February and 22 February 2024.
