When I was working with the Southern Kingfish Association about 15 years ago, I met and befriended Capt. George Mitchell. He would arrive at tournaments in a stunning hauler towing a high-performance center-console, both wrapped in matching blue and white Yamaha graphics. He has maintained that affiliation to this day, serving as the company’s saltwater fishing guru, technical advisor and fishing instructor, helping thousands of anglers up their game.

My first visit to this sometimes overlooked part of the New England coast was as a young writer for a regional fishing magazine. I was invited to tag along on a day trip with a local striper fisherman who owned a house on Calef Avenue, barely a mile away from the Point Judith lighthouse. Perched on the bluffs overlooking Narragansett Bay, the view from his living room window was spectacular.

I was sitting in my office daydreaming about a bluefin run I made a while back. Catching these amazing gamefish creates vivid memories. It was on a day in early May, well before first light, when I left Manasquan Inlet aboard my friend Roger’s 32 Regulator. The weather was mild, the seas obliging, and our destination 55 miles away was the Triple Wrecks area. The first lump had no signs of life, and nothing showed on the depth finder, so off to the next we went.

Imagine this. You’re plugging a tidal river shoreline, trolling motor quietly guiding the boat as you cast a topwater slider toward the bank. Using creative rod action, you make it walk from side to side, then pause. With a splash, the lure disappears, the line comes tight, and you instinctively set the hook. A hefty striper charges away straining the rod, pulling drag in an attempt to escape to deeper water.
