BECKLEY — A bill recently passed by state legislators that will open the door for West Virginia private elementary and middle school teams to compete in county tournaments will go into effect next month. Delegate Eric Brooks, R-Raleigh, introduced House Bill 2528 to the Committee on Education on Feb. 18. He drafted the bill after it was brought to his attention that Greater Beckley Christian had been denied entry into the Raleigh County middle school girls basketball tournament.

If Woodrow Wilson is able to repeat as state soccer champion this fall, the celebration will again come on its home field. The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission announced last week that the high school state soccer championships will remain at Beckley’s YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex for the next four seasons, ending in 2028. AdvertisementBeckley has served as the tournament’s home since 2003, missing only the 2012 season.
