After seeing and hearing the truly astounding amount of “lies, damned lies and statistics” put forward recently to tip the 2024 elections, I was struck by the irony of many who had so frequently and vociferously pledged allegiance to democracy working so hard to minimize the electorate’s knowledge of truth, much less justice or the American way, and with it, the likelihood of making wise democratic choices.

California, where I live, is often considered a trendsetting state, providing an example that others frequently choose to follow. As a long-time resident, however, I can attest our policy examples are often very bad ones to follow, if we are to judge by their adverse effects. Proposition 2 on November’s ballot is a good example. On the surface, it appears to be a relatively standard “we need more money for our schools” bond issue, except for its $10 billion price tag.
