Breaking news, not fiction: OpenAI finally released o3 and Tyler Cowen claimed it was AGITyler Cowen has become the ultimate “AI Influencer”, and I don’t mean that as a compliment. “AI Influencers” are, truth be told, people who pump up AI in order to gain influence, writing wild over-the-top praise of AI without engaging in the drawbacks and limitations. The most egregious of that species also demonize (not just critique) anyone who does point to limitations.

Deep learning is indeed finally hitting a wall, in the sense of reaching a point of diminishing results. That’s been clear for months. One of the clearest signs of this is the saga of the just-released Llama 4, the latest failed billion (?) dollar attempt by one of the majors to create what we might call GPT-5 level AI. OpenAI failed at this (calling their best result GPT-4.5, and recently announcing a further delay on GPT-5); Grok failed at this (Grok 3 is no GPT 5).

Very sorry to haunt your mailbox twice in one day, and sorry for any typos below, but you really might want to read this thread, in equal parts hilarious and horrible. Basically, it turns out that Trump’s tariff rates derived from a simple formula that James Surowiecki inferred correctly:It gets better (or worse, depending on your perspective). The White House denied it, and said Surowiecki was an idiot.

The X-verse is now filled with tweets like these, driven by a new study of LLMs and The Turing Test:Last time I read stuff like this, which (as discussed below) was in 2014, I fell off my dinosaur and broke my newspaper. I do genuinely believe today’s Turing Test takers are better AI systems than an earlier generation. I hardly think that means anything is “over”. To begin with, the actual paper isn’t entirely convincing, if you read the fine print, as researcher Toby Ord quickly pointed out.
