STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council this week approved increased ambulance service rates for 2025. Ambulance Shawn Fisher says they haven’t raised the rates in three years and says they are not collecting anything more from Medicare. Fisher says the ambulance service has to figure out how to bring more money in. Fisher proposed $1,200 for emergency calls and a $100 dollar increase in lift assists calls.

PIERRE, S.D. – The tourism industry in South Dakota continues to thrive, with 2024 marking another year of record growth and economic contributions statewide. According to the annual study conducted by Tourism Economics, South Dakota welcomed 14.9 million visitors, an increase of 1.4% over 2023. Those visitors spent $5.09 billion, an increase of 2.8% over 2023.

STURGIS, S.D. – Winter weather in the northern hills have caused some travel problems Wednesday morning. The South Dakota Highway Patrol and local law enforcement have been busy responding to accidents, especially along the I-90 corridor from the Wyoming state line down to Piedmont. A rollover was reported near Exit 17 at Spearfish and a Fed-Ex truck was reportedly involved in a slide-off the Interstate this morning.

PIERRE, S.D. (SDBA) — A bill tightening South Dakota’s voter residency requirements narrowly passes a House committee today (Wednesday). That is despite concerns about enforcement and potential voter disenfranchisement. The House State Affairs Committee voted 7-6 to advance House Bill 1066. It aims to define more clearly who can vote in state elections. The bill would require voters to prove they actually live in South Dakota.

The commission usually meets monthly on the first Tuesday following the first City Council meeting.
