Another US activist investor is taking a pop at a British company. Engine Capital, a New York-based hedge fund set up in 2013, is calling for FTSE 100 engineer Smiths Group, founded in 1851, to explore a break-up or sell itself in entirety. Arnaud Ajdler, Engine's founder and portfolio manager, who teaches 'value investing' at Columbia Business School, told Smiths bosses the company is significantly undervalued 'due to its conglomerate structure' and that needs to change.

Consumers may be nervous about their finances, but spending on easy dinners at home shows no sign of slowing. Deliveroo took 43.1m orders in the UK and Ireland in the final three months of last year, 5 per cent more than a year earlier. And the total cost of baskets plus delivery fees jumped 9 per cent to £1.2billion. The delivery group has extended its reach to work with retailers such as B&Q, The Perfume Shop and Ann Summers. Its shares closed up 6.6 per cent, or 8.5p, at 137.9p.

There was finally a smattering of better news from the beleaguered housebuilding sector. Persimmon rallied from its lowest level since late 2023 by 5.5 per cent, or 58p, to 1114p after reassuring investors that annual profits were likely to be towards the upper end of the range analysts expect. The builder completed more than 10,660 homes last year, from studio apartments to five-bedroom houses. That was up 7 per cent from 2023 and more than expected.

Crumbling confidence in the economy consigned the FTSE 250 to its worst week in more than a year. With about 40 per cent of its sales made at home, the mid-cap index is vulnerable to the weakening pound and deepening concern about the UK's growth prospects and fiscal credibility. A decline yesterday of 1.4 per cent, or 271.2 points, to 19733.94 left the FTSE 250 at its lowest since April, down 4.2 per cent over the week, its sharpest loss since June 2023.
