The Yankees are promoting 19-year-old George Lombard Jr. to Double-A Somerset, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Lombard, the top farmhand in the team’s system and a top-100 prospect, has gotten off to a stellar start at High-A Hudson Valley this season, slashing .329/.496/.488 with one homer, 13 RBI and 11 stolen bases. The natural shortstop has also recorded a 23-to-22 walk-to-strikeout ratio while spending a few innings at second base and third base.

With rain falling in the Bronx before and during the Yankees’ delayed series finale against the Rays, the Bombers lost at home, 7-5, on Sunday. The defeat marked the first-place Yankees’ second straight series loss to a divisional opponent, as the last-place Orioles took 2-of-3 from them in Baltimore earlier this week before the fourth-place Rays did the same. The tight loss also saw bench players J.C. Escarra, Pablo Reyes and Oswald Peraza all in the starting lineup.

One day after hurting his left shoulder, Anthony Volpe was held out of the Yankees‘ lineup for their Sunday series finale against the Rays. The shortstop said he felt a “pop” in his shoulder after diving for a grounder in the hole during the eighth inning of Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay. Volpe was clearly in pain after landing hard on his shoulder, but he remained in the game and made a costly error a few batters later.

For the second time in less than two weeks, Max Fried left the Rays dead in the water. While the lefty didn’t take a no-hit bid into the eighth like he did in Tampa on April 20, Fried held the Yankees’ division rival to just one knock over seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 win on Friday. With the series-opening victory, the Bombers improved to a perfect 7-0 with their new ace on the mound.
