Fly-fishing legend Bernard Victor “Lefty” Kreh passed away at his Cockeysville, Maryland, home surrounded by family on March 14, 2018. He was 93. Born in Frederick, Maryland, in 1925, Kreh reinvented the way fly anglers cast, pioneered the sport of saltwater fly-fishing and developed some of the most successful fly patterns ever tied. Kreh’s books, newspaper columns and magazine articles inspired generations of anglers, and his casting lessons taught thousands how to be better casters.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association today announced that U.S. representatives Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) and Rob Wittman (R-Va.) introduced legislation to reauthorize the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, which supports critical conservation and infrastructure programs in all 50 states. Established in 1950, the fund directs excise tax revenue from fishing equipment, powerboat fuel and other boating-related sources into a range of national and state-level programs.
TowBoatUS Announces Minnesota Port

TowBoatUS yesterday announced the addition of a towing and assistance port in Roosevelt, Minn., on the west side of Lake of the Woods. The operation will be run by Capts. Doug and Melanie Nelson. TowBoatUS Rocky Point has a 21-foot response vessel for towing and salvage homeported at Arneson’s Rock Point Resort in Roosevelt, Minn. The Nelsons are Coast Guard-licensed captains. This is the couple’s second TowBoatUS location, which joins their port in Baudette, Minn.

I was only 20 years old when I started in this industry. I answered a classified ad for a sales clerk position at a well-respected, full-service ship’s store on the Annapolis, Md., waterfront. I was essentially homeless at the time — living with a good friend’s parents — and I really needed a job. By that point in life, I was done with waiting tables, bartending and managing restaurants, which I’d done since I got a work permit at age 15.
