British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has been blasted for saying “there are no journalists in Gaza” at a meeting in parliament on Wednesday. Lammy was asked by fellow Labour MP Matthew Patrick at a House of Commons foreign affairs committee meeting about his assessment "of the nature of the conflict" in Gaza and "how that impinges on getting aid in”. "As I said, there is now widespread looting," Lammy said in his reply.

Britain has refused to confirm whether it gave Israel's military chief of staff, Herzi Halevi, special mission immunity when it hosted him last week. Halevi's visit came amid speculation that the International Criminal Court (ICC) could issue an arrest warrant for him over human rights violations in Gaza. The military chief visited Britain just days after the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes.

More than 60 MPs from seven parties have written to British Foreign Secretary David Lammy urging him to impose sanctions on Israel over "repeated violations of international law". The letter, sent to Lammy on Wednesday night and seen by Middle East Eye, was organised by MPs Richard Burgon and Imran Hussain, both formerly Labour MPs but currently independent.

The UK government is engaged in a strategy of distraction, diversion and avoidance when it comes to how it responds when directly questioned on exactly what its legal duties are under international law as a third state. Ministers have deliberately injected ambiguity over how they define genocide as part of this same strategy, all for the sole purpose of maintaining a policy of inaction that evades accountability and provides Israel with total impunity.
