The BJP was a fairly insignificant player in the political landscape of Haryana until 2014. The Narendra Modi wave in the Lok Sabha election that year was enough to carry the BJP to a convincing victory in the Assembly election held later that year; the party won 47 of the 90 seats and tasted power on its own for the first time in the State.

The outcome of the Lok Sabha election in Punjab, while presenting significant takeaways, also presents an interesting and intriguing paradox. On the one hand, the Congress, in spite of its tainted history of Operation Blue Star in 1984 and the anti-Sikh pogrom that followed, won seven of the 13 seats. On the other, in Khadoor Sahib and Faridkot constituencies, a parallel undercurrent on these sensitive issues polarised voters against the Congress and ensured the rise of radicals.

The Congress has staged a comeback in the electoral politics of the north-eastern region, increasing its tally to 7 of the total of 25 seats in the region from 4 in 2019. Local Congress leaders attributed the improvement in the party’s performance to Rahul Gandhi starting his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Manipur and passing through most States in the region. The BJP still dominated the election by winning 13 seats, the maximum from the region, but its tally was lower than the 15 it won in 2019.

The balanced outcome of the Lok Sabha election in Haryana has set the tone for the Assembly election in the State four months from now, with the Congress, as of now, the clear favourite. The June 4 electoral result showed the near total rout of the regional powers that once dominated the political landscape in this Jat-dominated State, and turned the contest in Haryana from a multi-cornered fight to a near bipolar contest.

The people of Maharashtra have spoken decisively against the revolving door politics of the past five years. The 2024 general election was the first test of public response to the political flux in the State since 2019, when the Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray broke his alliance with the BJP to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government with the Congress and Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). In 2022, Eknath Shinde of his party usurped him by aligning with the BJP.
