Celtic midfielder Arne Engels admits they were determined to deliver a statement performance at Hampden as they avenged their recent defeat by St Johnstone and showed they are ready to finish the season on a high. Manager Brendan Rodgers was critical of his team’s attitude after they fell to a 1-0 loss in Perth against the William Hill Premiership bottom club earlier in April. But they have responded by hitting four first-half goals against both Kilmarnock and Saints in the following two weekends.

Manager Brendan Rodgers defended Idah’s professionalism ahead of the Hampden tie after footage emerged on social media of the Irishman’s midweek night out, which included film of him appearing to be sick in a taxi. The 24-year-old retained his place in the starting line-up and netted from close range as Celtic hit four goals in 12 minutes before half-time. The holders wreaked vengeance following defeat in Perth two weeks ago as they won 5-0 to set up a return trip to Hampden to face Aberdeen on May 24. With Celtic needing just one point from their last five matches to wrap up the Scottish Premiership title, the final is set to give Celtic the chance to seal the first treble of Brendan Rodgers’ second reign, against the same opponents he overcame to clinch his first in 2017. It would be the club’s ninth treble and their sixth in nine seasons.

The Celtic manager quickly stressed his focus would be adding to the squad in the summer transfer market as he anticipates a natural turnover. Rodgers confessed his anger after Sunday's defeat by bottom club St Johnstone, which eradicated the opportunity to clinch the William Hill Premiership title at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday. After losing just twice in the whole of 2024 in all competitions - to Rangers and Borussia Dortmund - Celtic have suffered six defeats so far this year.
