HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Two young sisters apparently drowned in a pond near their Long Island apartment complex, authorities said. A family member called police Saturday afternoon to report that the girls, ages 2 and 4, had gone missing. Officers and locals searched the girls’ apartment complex in Holtsville and found them unresponsive in a nearby pond shortly before 3:30 p.m., police said.

Ylenia Aguilar raised her two sons in Arizona — first in Tucson and later Phoenix, so they’re no strangers to scorching heat. For this reviewer, it was a pleasant walk down memory lane, watching some of the original cast turn up in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, 36 years after the original Beetlejuice hit theaters. Sensibilities have changed, but the after world and Michael Keaton, our titular character, are as always, ready for showtime. Yes, Keaton is back and so is Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara and some of our favorite ghouls.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday the daring military incursion into Russia’s Kursk region aims to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border. It was the first time Zelenskyy clearly stated the aim of the operation, which was launched on Aug. 6. Previously, he had said the operation aimed to protect communities in the bordering Sumy region from constant shelling.

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli strikes across Gaza killed 29 people overnight and into Sunday, including young quintuplets, local health officials said, as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in the region to try to seal a cease-fire deal after months of negotiations. The U.S. and fellow mediators Egypt and Qatar said they were closing in on a deal after two days of talks in Doha, with American and Israeli officials expressing cautious optimism.
