While the fictional Fawlty Towers might have seemed like another marvellous creation from the legend that is John Cleese, not all fans will be aware that a real place and real people inspired the much-loved classic British sitcom. Haphazard hotel owner Basil Fawlty was actually based on Donald Sinclair, the owner of the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay back in the 1970s. The Gleneagles was not originally built as a hotel but was modified to become one, first opening in 1963.
