    The Stephen Schwartz musical The Baker’s Wife is based on the 1938 French film with the same name, written and directed by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono. Set in a quaint French provincial village in the 1930s, it is a gently comic and bittersweet fable about life, love, and bread. An affable older baker and his beautiful wife arrive in a town filled with petty feuds and comically rigid relationships. When the wife elopes with a charming young chauffeur, the village is forever transformed.

    When Next to Normal premiered on Broadway in 2009, it challenged conventional ideas of what a musical could be. Addressing deeply personal and often taboo topics such as mental illness, grief, and the complexities of family relationships, the show brought a raw and innovative story to the stage.
