Madison author Michelle Wildgen knows that when many people think of wine — and people who write about wine — they envision “old men talking about Bordeaux.”“That’s not what I’m talking about,” Wildgen says about her latest novel, “Wine People,” published in August. Her book is “not too serious or snobby” but looks at the dynamics of two women trying to succeed in the wine business. Wildgen will discuss her book during the Wisconsin Book Festival later this month.

There might not be a better time to read Hannah Morrissey’s latest thriller, “When I’m Dead,” than before her event with the Wisconsin Book Festival in mid-October. The book opens on a “bone-chilling October night” and its events unfold over Halloween. This is the third book for Morrissey, who studied creative writing at UW-Madison and lives near Milwaukee.

Books can be educational, fun, suspenseful and scary. They can make us laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. “They help us grow in ways that are unexpected, interesting and fun,” said Jane Rotonda, director of the Wisconsin Book Festival. This year’s festival, which celebrates its marquee event in mid-October, tries to hit all those notes while amplifying representative voices and creating a space for as many genres and readers as possible, she said.
