(CNN) — While ferocious snowfall threatens to trap residents in parts of the Great Lakes region, millions of holiday travelers face bitter Arctic air that will soon blast half of the entire country. Temperatures will plunge 15 to 25 degrees across much of the eastern US over the next few days, from Minnesota all the way down to Texas. Hurricane Milton in the Gulf of Mexico blossomed to Category 5 intensity again Tuesday and, as of Wednesday morning, is still potent with maximum winds of 155 mph. While its category has dropped to a 4, it is still expected to bring a life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds, leading to power outages along Florida's west coast. The last time a hurricane was this potent in the Gulf of Mexico was Wilma in 2005.
