Europe’s venture funding plateaued at $12.6 billion in Q1 2025 — flat quarter over quarter and year over year, Crunchbase data shows. Without the sort of outsized AI funding rounds seen in North America in the first quarter, the continent’s share of global funding also fell. Funding in the latest quarter was on the lower end of the spectrum in Europe. Since the venture funding downturn started in 2022, funding in the region has fluctuated by quarter.

Bay Area-based SignalFire, a data-driven venture firm, has raised $1 billion for its fifth and largest fund, which it will invest in applied AI companies. We spoke with founder Chris Farmer on the firm’s investment thesis, 12 years on from its founding. “It’s a fantastic validation that we have enough proof points in the portfolio and enough scale with companies that we’ve gotten into very early, that are quite large at this point,” he said.

Earlier this month I was in Las Vegas for HumanX, a new AI industry conference, alongside about 3,000 other attendees. I also moderated a panel on-stage with early-stage investors from three VC firms that have overwhelmingly been placing their bets lately on artificial intelligence: Kleiner Perkins, Bain Capital Ventures and Primary Venture Partners. For these three firms, investments in AI-related companies reached an astonishing 80% to 90% of their new portfolio deals in 2024.
