New software has been launched as a direct response to helping the shipping sector meet obligations under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
The EU ETC Scheme means that as of 1 January 2024, ship owners, managers and charterers will have to buy emission allowances (EUAs) for every tonne of CO2 emitted - the trouble is a large proportion of companies are not yet sufficiently prepared for this.

The Barmouth, North Wales railway viaduct restoration is being carried out by Alun Griffiths and Network Rail, the train operator. Pennys Group has been contracted to demolish the old viaduct.
“Many of the timber elements of the viaduct have decayed significantly over time and a large proportion of the metallic elements have corroded,” Network Rail, which is carrying out the work, said.

Built at Isle of Wight shipyard, Diverse Marine, for High Speed Transfers, the HST Millie is IMO Tier 3 compliant with selective catalytic reduce to reduce NOx and SOx emissions.
“We are delighted to have HST Millie on sea trials, prior to her handover to High Speed Transfers,” said Ben Colman, director and co-founder of Diverse Marine
“We have now safely lifted and installed the launch and recovery system on to the deck of the first production Hydronaut,” he added.

Maritime safety start-up Zelim is celebrating an agreement with the US Coast Guard that will trial artificial intelligence (AI) in search and rescue. The Scotland-based firm says it has signed what is known as a CRADA (Co-operative Research and Development Agreement) with the US Coast Guard Research and Development Center (USCG RDC).

Testing and certification firm Bureau Veritas (BV) has invested in a New York-based maritime software company to speed up the development of data-driven solutions in maritime with a focus on addressing new climate regulations. BV will work with OrbitMI to try to address the ‘dual opportunities of the digital transformation and the decarbonisation of shipping’.

TouchWind’s technology is unusual in that it consists of just one rotor blade as opposed to the standard number of three on fixed-bottom or other floating turbines.
These turbines also tilt depending on the direction of the wind, which means, the company says, they will never have to be switched off no matter how strongly the wind is blowing.
