By 2025, according to industry executives surveyed last year, there will be fewer than 50. The portfolios of the two biggest super funds, AustralianSuper and Australian Retirement Trust, are bigger than even the federal government’s Future Fund Management Agency, which oversees the A$194 billion Future Fund and several other funds worth a total $242 billion.

Underpinning the current wave of consolidation amongst Australian superannuation funds is the belief that it helps to be big. Is this really the case? Is there any advantage in being a member of a large super fund? We address the question of whether large size benefits members in a recent paper. Our answer is a ‘definite maybe’. We don’t think size matters as much as how it is used. If a large fund can leverage the advantages and limit the disadvantages of size, then members can be better off.

We never expected the review of the Your Future, Your Super performance test instigated by the Minister for Financial Services Stephen Jones to recommend the significant changes necessary to make the test less costly and more effective. This would require moving the performance test from a legislative to a regulatory framework, and empowering APRA to utilise multiple metrics and a qualitative overlay. Nonetheless, the changes recommended by the Minister and Treasury will have positive impact.
