Of course I love Headingley but this is not my Yorkshire bias. There is a reason why Australia usually start an Ashes series in Brisbane: they win at the Gabba. The last time they lost to England in Brisbane was 1986. This winter they are starting in Perth, a place where England have won one Test match since 1970. We should do the same, play at the grounds where we have a record of winning.

In recent years the Headingley pitch has changed. With the sun out it used to be a belter for batting and then in overcast conditions it was lovely for swing and seam bowlers as batsmen hunted to find the ball. Now it tends to look good but can be lively on the first day before getting better for batting with hardly any deterioration. If England win the toss do not be surprised if they bowl first hoping to get some first day movement.

England should beat India if they temper Bazball and use some common sense. At times their cricket has been thrilling and super enjoyable but also reckless batting has lost them Test matches. Their only thought should be winning because it is no use telling us how good you are when the last three World Test Championship finals have been played in our country but England have not qualified for any of them. They should be embarrassed. Their aim should be to make the next WTC final.

When you compare England and Australia there is not much to choose between the batting. They have one great batsman in Steve Smith, we have one in Joe Root. They have dangerous Travis Head down the order and we have Harry Brook. It is pretty equal. But bowling? That is very different. The Aussie attack has variation. Pat Cummins is genuinely quick. They have a left-arm seamer in Mitchell Starc who provides a different angle, and plenty of rough for Nathan Lyon to work with.
