There is an appetite for further research on alcohol and pleasure, focusing on both theoretical and practical considerations. The complexity of the issues involved means such research will, by necessity, involve interdisciplinary collaborations. The responses to our article highlight several promising directions this work could take. We thank our commentators for their thoughtful reflections on how alcohol research can better engage with pleasure.

INTRODUCTION Alcohol research has a problem with pleasure. On the one hand, pleasure is a difficult phenomenon to research, at least from an epidemiological or clinical perspective. On the other, because of its predominating focus on harms, public health-oriented alcohol research and advocacy can appear to find pleasure problematic in the moral sense.

Around the turn of the second century, St. Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, was condemned by a Roman tribunal to be torn apart and eaten by lions in the Coliseum. What was his crime? Ignatius was condemned because his speech was subversive to the Roman social order. Having a public audience worsened his exercise of free speech; speaking freely in front of an assembled mob was the real crime.
But Ignatius’s death sentence didn’t chill his speech.

Nullification, or to nullify, is usually a stunning erasure — to quash, undo, repudiate, wipe out.
“Jury nullification” joined the lexicon of crime- and court-watchers once a jury verdict acquitted O.J. Simpson of murder in 1995.
Socio-political nullification today is more than garden-variety civil disobedience or hotly contested policy preferences. Nullification has become an embedded new norm, as institutions — many existing for centuries — are tipped, toppled, and smelted.
