Donald Trump, who went to great lengths to avoid military service and never passes up an opportunity to be the center of attention, is going to use the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army to celebrate his 79th birthday. While events on June 14 will include concerts, fireworks, displays and other activities, the centerpiece will be a parade through Washington, D.C., featuring 6,700 soldiers, 28 tanks and numerous other Army gear, and 50 helicopters and aircraft.

The chaos that comes with any new Trump Administration raises many concerns among people, especially those of us who didn’t vote for him. California has its own set of issues, from ending homelessness to paying for MediCal treatment of the poor while it waits anxiously to see how much federal funding it’s going to lose. The state is currently projecting a $12 billion deficit.

Doug LaMalfa for his seat representing the first Congressional district. LaMalfa had little trouble dispatching Hall, finishing with 61% of the vote. That was about LaMalfa’s high water mark before he was redistricted in 2020.

If you were frustrated by your inability to personally speak to Rep. Kevin Kiley during his two recent tele-town halls, you clearly aren’t running in the proper circles. Three days previous to the first town hall, you could have had cocktails with Kiley at a March 14 event hosted by the Capital Lincoln Club in Sacramento, a runup to the California GOP convention held that weekend. Price of admission was $50 if you’re not a member of the club, or $25 if you are.

Because they just have to do something, opponents of President Donald Trump launched the first of a series of consumer boycotts last Friday to protest corporate greed and companies that are rolling back DEI initiatives. Nevada County Democrats joined the effort started by something called The People’s Union, urging their fellow travelers to shun in-store or online purchases, and not spend money on fast food, gas, and major retailers—specifically amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy.

The Republican Party has traditionally been the party of law-and-order, always praising the work of police and making excuses when they are wrong, and raising their budgets even when they were cutting other programs. Republicans got a lot of political mileage from pounding the Democrats after the progressive wing of the party started the tone-deaf defund the police movement.

The Los Angeles-area fires that are still burning as I write this have Nevada County residents nervous again. A recent Fire Safe Council presentation on the Deer Creek Shaded Fuel Project packed the house while YubaNet has posed the existential question, “How do you feel about getting through the next fire season?”Meanwhile, the Banner Mountain Firewise Community has scheduled a presentation for Jan. 28 on “How to make our defensible space more defensible.” That should fill the house.
