Child rapists can still get probation in Colorado thanks to six Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee. On March 12, state Reps. Javier Mabrey (Denver), Michael Carter (Adams, Arapahoe), Jennifer Bacon (Denver), Cecelia Espenoza (Denver), Lorena Garcia (Adams, Jefferson), and Tara Zokaie (Larimer) each voted to prevent the promise of prison for those who sexually assault Colorado children.

Jared Polis’ farcical denial that Colorado is a “sanctuary from the law” state for illegal immigrants, I had publicly asked what more could a state do to do earn that odious title. Our extremist, Democrat-dominated Legislature recently provided two more examples to erase any doubt about Colorado’s true and intended status.

If there were a Doomsday clock for the Rule of Law in America, it would be several seconds closer to midnight after the events surrounding the dismissal of the indictment against New York City Mayor Eric Adams last week. For those Americans who agree with Abraham Lincoln that “reverence for the law…[should become] the political religion of the nation” and that we must “sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars,” last week’s dismissal — without prejudice — feels like a kick to the junk.

In Colorado, a man who rapes a child — as long as it is just once — can get probation. As in, walk right out of the courtroom after conviction. But it is much worse than that. If that same man goes on to rape nine other children, as long as he only rapes them each once, that child rapist is also eligible for probation. That statement remains true even if the child rapist is a teacher, member of clergy, sports coach or any other person in a position of trust in relation to those children.

Colorado’s New Year Resolution to “suck less” when it comes to crime and public safety is on the ropes more quickly than my pledge to work out every day and stop eating loaves of bread. Two days after Gov. Jared Polis declared in his seventh State of the State address that “[i]n Colorado, we have zero tolerance for those who commit violent crimes,” a 24-year-old man cut loose by Denver courts to our streets on a PR bond stabbed four innocent people on the 16th Street Mall, killing two of them.
