The Independent Media group, owner of titles such as The Star, Cape Times and Sunday Independent, has been expelled from the Press Council of South Africa. This was after the group refused to obey sanctions against it for a column that compared News24 legal journalist Karyn Maughan to Nazi film propagandist Leni Riefenstahl. Independent initially attempted to withdraw from the council, but it rejected this, and unanimously decided to expel the group with immediate effect.
