In Kaya, Burkina Faso, Nomos has overseen the expansion of a medical centre using Nubian vaults and banco techniquesIn Kaya, a city in central Burkina Faso, 100km or so from the capital Ouagadougou, a woman has travelled more than 300km to receive treatment at a new medical facility. She has a problem with her foot, and is examined in the Centre Médico‑Chirurgical (CMC) Kaya’s new banco (mud brick) building, completed earlier this year. She is satisfied with her treatment.

Not long ago, I worked closely with the architect Søren Pihlmann when he was transforming a villa just north of Copenhagen. I was the client, he was the architect, and, because architecture is also my field—I am an art historian, writer, and curator—we decided to frame our collaboration as a project where we both would both contribute to the processes essential for its artistic development.

There is a lesser-known shadow twin to Daniel Burnham’s epic 1909 Plan of Chicago, which synthesized many elements of contemporary urbanism we have come to expect from cities: comprehensive parks and highway systems, an orderly street grid, preserving the city’s waterfront as a public amenity, and coherent neighborhood-scaled civic centers.
