Q. Hi George,This question isn't directly relevant to my work, but something I've always wondered about the meta-craft of writing stories. How does one go about planning and organizing and writing stories in the context of a published collection? It feels like some writers will just bundle up the last 8-10 stories they've written and ship them out under a title, but others craft stories specifically with the larger thematic umbrella of a collection in mind.

Thank you all for your insightful comments and special thanks to Peter for directing us to “The Prevention of Literature” by George Orwell, which I’d never read before and is full of power and relevance. And thanks to our beloved Mary G. for finding this gem – letters exchanged between two of our greatest short story writers, Katherine Anne Porter and Flannery O’Connor. (And it only now occurs to me that we’ve never done an O’Connor story here yet.
