Top U.S. auto safety regulators are closing an investigation into about 1.7 million Honda Motor Co. vehicles over a loss of power. The probe covered 2018-22 Honda CR-Vs and Honda HR-Vs. NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation opened the probe — known as a preliminary evaluation — in November 2022 following reports alleging power loss while the vehicle was moving, increasing the risk of a crash.

President Joe Biden's sweeping automotive and labor policies will likely be passed to Vice President Kamala Harris following his historic withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election. Biden, who was facing a rematch against former President Donald Trump, dropped out of the race Sunday after a debate performance that left many stakeholders questioning whether the 81-year-old had the cognitive ability to do the job. The president endorsed Harris after the announcement.

The Chevron deference doctrine had required courts to defer to federal agencies' expertise when interpreting ambiguous statutes.

"The big point for us here is that we know these systems aren't very common, but the type of crash that they address are extremely common," said David Aylor, vice president of active safety at IIHS. "These are the types of crashes when you're backing out of a parking spot in a grocery store or backing out of your driveway."Nearly 30 percent of collision claims were for crashes involving rear points of impact, IIHS said.
