When Kate was diagnosed with an aggressive and advanced breast cancer her life became a flurry of hospital appointments and surgeries. Those early days were surrounded by love, home-cooked meals, and a schedule of treatments. Fast forward a few years and Kate is cancer free, but lives with daily chronic pain as she waits for reconstructive surgery. Georgia Stynes spoke to Kate Midena and Vicki Durston from the Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Canberra band Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers met as eight-year-olds in Kambah. Their origin story couldn’t be more wholesome. At a sleepover in Year Nine they watched School of Rock and thought "that looks fun''. Fast forward nine years and the group are touring with two of their childhood favourite bands, Pearl Jam and the Pixies. They have just made history by becoming the first all-female and non-binary band to win the ARIA Breakthrough Artist Award.

The High Court of Australia might be the most architecturally bold building in Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle. Completed in 1980 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II, the high court building was designed by architectural firm Edwards Madigan Torzillo and Briggs. The same firm also designed the court’s architectural sibling and neighbour, the National Gallery of Australia.

The Woden Library and Phillip Health Centre are key examples of late twentieth century brutalism in Canberra. Designed by the firm of Ancher, Mortlock and Woolley in 1975, it included novel creative and technical achievement in its design. Some of the much-loved features include the sunken reading pit, concrete pergola, and the open foyer created between the buildings. They also point to a time when large investments were made into community infrastructure in the Woden Town Centre.
