I have been campaigning for affordable, accessible, quality early childhood education and care for so long that my eldest child, who enlightened me to the system’s perils, is now closer to finishing secondary school than starting kindergarten. Many others have been campaigning for this cause for far longer. As CEO of The Parenthood for the past 4.5 years I’ve been single-minded in pursuit of reform.

The PC then said that removing all barriers to childcare would enable the equivalent of 143,000 full-time parents to join the workforce. This affirms what we know from parents in The Parenthood's community, especially mums, who find themselves unable to freely "choose" how they participate in paid work because of cost or access challenges with childcare. So far, so good. But then what?

In my job as CEO of The Parenthood I’m often invited to speak on TV about topics affecting the parents and carers in our community. Often, it’s about paid parental leave or being able to afford and access quality early learning and care, or finding a job in which it’s possible to work and raise a family. And so it was, a few weeks back, that I found myself, ahead of a segment on The Today Show, sitting in a make-up chair while two wizards set about weaving their magic.

The context in which women in Australia “choose” how to combine work and care is still dictated by policies and practices that entrench “mum as caregiver” and “dad as breadwinner” as the prevailing norm. It informs our culture, which remains firmly wedded to stereotypical roles for men and women, in ways other countries have shifted. Changing this context so parents can truly “choose” what works for their families depends on reform.

This week one of Australia’s largest for-profit childcare providers G8 announced its fifth consecutive fee increase since January 2022. In a little over two years fees have increased by 23.8%. That’s not a typo. Back in 2022 parents were not raving about how affordable early childhood education and care is: this kind of fee increase is just not sustainable for household budgets to absorb.

A month ago almost to the day, along with my husband and our three daughters aged 7, 11 & 13, I arrived back in Australia after a six month sabbatical in Canada. We had temporarily relocated for my husband’s work, our girls were enrolled in school and I took a leave of absence from my job. (The Parenthood’s acting CEO, Jessica Rudd, led the organisation exceptionally well in my absence). I called my sabbatical parental leave without a baby.

If a tree falls and no one hears it, does it make a noise? If someone speaks - even screams - and no one listens, does it make a sound? Having a voice is one thing: having a voice that is heard is something altogether different. The title of this substack makes it pretty clear that right now I’m on sabbatical and I’m not going to lie. I am being fanatical about this being an actual sabbatical. I’m writing for fun when the urge hits but I’m not working. Actively “not working” is a skill I’m working on.

It’s been seven years since I welcomed a new baby, our third daughter, into the world. It was an unexpectedly blissful year and this column from December 2016 confirms it’s not just hindsight or nostalgia that’s colouring my memory of that chapter in rose. It truly was one of the most joyful times in my life. Our third daughter was one of those mythical creatures I dared not speak of at the time lest I jinx it – she was a baby who fed and slept happily from the moment she arrived.
