Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) are multidisciplinary teams that work at the state or local level to review deaths that occurred during or within a year of pregnancy. They determine whether the death was related to the pregnancy, identify factors that contributed to the death, and determine whether the death could have been prevented.7 The first MMRC was formed in Philadelphia in the 1930s, and by 1940, the city reported a substantial decrease in the incidence of maternal mortality.
