Medics in Meru have issued a 14 days strike notice to the county government over a failed September 2023, return to work agreement. The medics said despite them being lenient to Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s administration, they have been frustrated and taken for a ride. Leaders Nesbit Mugendi of Kenya National Union of Nurses, Moses Baiyenia for Clinicians, Mugambi Bakari for Pharmacists and nutritionists said implementation of the agreement was to start by April 2024.

The Kenya National Union of Nurses wants the national and county governents to employ more nurses to World Health Organization nurse-patient ratio. KNUN President Michael Wekesa lamented that since the start of the one week commemoration of Nurses Week, they have little to smile about. Wekesa claimed some nurses are stressed due to work-related burnout while others have develop physical health issues. "Eighty per cent of patients are currently being served by only one nurse from 7am-6pm daily.

Two women aged between 25-30 were on Tuesday morning killed by a suspected timber thief at Kiigene in Nkubu, South Imenti, Meru. Eye witness Muthomi Mburugu said the deceased saw the suspect breaking into the workshop and before they could scream for help, the suspect realised they had seen him and he attacked. "We are saddened by the brutal murder of two women. We are shocked to lose such young women. I heard screams on the road but I could not help in time.

Medics and interns have petitioned the Meru county assembly to push Governor Kawira Mwangaza to address their grievances. The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union Eastern region chairman Denis Mugambi said the health crisis would continue if their 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement is not implemented. Mugambi led other union leaders and hundreds of interns and medics in sit-ins and protest marches within Makutano and Meru towns. There was tight security.
