3. ResultsIn all 30 surveys, a total of 31,719 litter pieces, composed of 124 different litter items, were collected in a total area of 38,988.5 m2. In regard to total beach litter, focusing on litter per m2, it ranged from 0.04 to 5.95 pieces/m2 (mean: 1.01 pieces/m2 ± 1.08; median: 0.70 pieces/m2). When the findings were extrapolated to 100 m, litter piece counts ranged from 152 to 11,280 (mean: 2965 ± 2938 pieces per 100 m; median: 2039).

1. IntroductionMaritime transport plays a key role in the European economy, transporting about 75% of its external trade and approximately 31% of its internal trade [1]. During the next decades, the European Union’s Sustainable and Smart and Mobility Strategy aims at a significant increase in maritime transport, with required total investments until 2050 amounting to about 9.5 billion Euros [2]. This includes the deepening of existing navigation channels to enable larger ships.
