My uncle’s army uniform was on the wall of his enclosed front porch. My aunt had spray-painted it silver, uniquely displaying her pride in my uncle’s service during World War I. My uncle, a Barbados immigrant, is buried on Offutt Air Force Base. I was a pole bearer at his funeral.
My father, a Panamanian immigrant, is an Air Force veteran. Enlisting in the Air Force provided immigrants with a faster path to citizenship.
