Among the most serious of the many destructive effects of the ongoing war on Palestine is that it may set back the search for a solution to the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict for years to come. Despite five Arab-Israeli wars, a plethora of UN resolutions and numerous international peace proposals since 1967, nothing has succeeded in producing a solution acceptable to all sides.

As we come up to the first anniversary of Israel’s war on Gaza, I think back to 1948, when Israel was first created. Our family lived in Jerusalem, where I was born. But, like most of Palestine’s population, we were forced out from our homes in 1948 to make room for the state of Israel being created in our place. Learning to live in exile, people’s one comfort was the thought that Israel would not last.

15 May 1948. 7 October 2023. The day the two Nakbas began. I lived through the first and am now helplessly watching the second. Nakba One was bad enough. Roughly 65% of Palestine’s inhabitants were ethnically cleansed – the polite term for ‘expelled’ – from their homeland. Among them was my family, forced out of our Jerusalem home in April 1948.
