His Excellency Hiroshi Suzuki toured the Auchentoshan Distillery in Clydebank with First Minister John Swinney as the two discussed trade, including Scotland’s national drink. But during his first visit to Scotland he tried the nation’s other national drink.

    The Russian captain of a container ship from Aberdeen that crashed into a US oil tanker in the North Sea has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of a crew member. The Solong’s master, Vladimir Motin, 59, of Primorsky, St Petersburg, is charged over the death of crew member Mark Angelo Pernia, 38. Motin denied the charge during a hearing at the Old Bailey on Friday. Motin faces a provisional trial on January 12, 2026.

    Actor and comedian Russell Brand has pleaded not guilty at Southwark Crown Court to charges of rape and sexual assault. The 49-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court earlier this month where he heard details of allegations against him – including that he raped a woman in a hotel room when she attended a Labour Party conference. He is also accused of grabbing a TV worker’s breasts before dragging her into a toilet and orally raping her.

    Three gas distribution companies are paying a combined £8m in penalties after failing to attend some gas emergency reports on time. Regulator Ofgem said Scotland Gas Networks, Cadent Gas and Southern Gas Networks have voluntarily agreed to pay the funds after missing their targets between 2022 and 2023. Ofgem’s rules require companies which manage the gas network to attend reports of suspected gas leaks within one or two hours, depending on the incident, in 97% of cases.

The Prime Minister suggested Reform UK is creating a “toxic divide” with a campaign video produced by the party ahead of the vote. Voters go to the polls on June 5 in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse Holyrood constituency – a by-election called following the death of SNP MSP Christina McKelvie.
